Why should I become trained
in overdose rescue?

Opioid-related deaths have continued to increase in recent years. In Maryland, the number of deaths was 1,800 in 2016. Nationally, 63% of overdose deaths were opioid-related. Our friends, family, and neighbors are all, in some way, affected by opiate addiction. This is one way to help reduce the burden of this epidemic.

What will I learn during the training?

1. The recognition of the symptoms of opioid overdose;
2. The proper administration of naloxone;
3. The importance of contacting emergency medical services;
4. The care of an individual after the administration of naloxone.

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone (known by the brand names Narcan and Evzio) is a prescription medicine that can reverse an opioid-related overdose by quickly restoring breathing and consciousness.  The medication is easily administered by nasal spray or injection and lasts 30-90 minutes.  Naloxone has few side effects, is not addictive, cannot get a person high, and is safe for children and pregnant women. Naloxone will have no effect on someone who does not have opioids in his or her system. This training is supported by the generosity of the Baltimore City Health Department.
