  • Individual Therapy - One-on-one counseling.
  • Couples Therapy – Includes discussion and problem solving sessions for couples (gay, lesbian, straight, etc.).
  • Family Therapy - Includes discussion and problem-solving sessions with members of the family.
  • Group Therapy - A small group of unrelated people who, with the guidance of a trained therapist, discuss individual issues and help each other problem solve.

THERAPY GROUPS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

Virtual

What the group is about: Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) can cause many fears and anxieties, but it also can leave you feeling alone.

This weekly, semi-structured behavioral group designed to reduce the isolation by providing group support those living with DID. During each group session, we will check in with the group members and discuss the struggles, and successes, of living with DID.

Who this group is for: Individuals living with DID.

When & Where: Mondays, 3PM-4PM via Telehealth.

What the group is about: No matter how long ago or how recently traumas occurred, they can leave us struggling with physical and mental symptoms that disrupt our lives. 

While learning about the connection between mind and body, in this group for LGBTQIA+ identifying Black, Indigenous, and People of Color you will be introduced to mind-body skills that can help you cope with the post-trauma symptoms you are experiencing. 

Some of the tools you will learn and practice include meditation (a relaxation exercise that focuses on clearing your mind), guided imagery (using your imagination to create a positive scene that helps to you to feel peace, calm, and relaxation), art (creating art to explore and relieve your mind of trauma), breathwork (using breathing techniques to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and more), and autogenic training (developing a specific phrase that triggers calm and relaxation for you).

 Who this group is for: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) who identify as LGBTQIA+ , ages 35-50. 

This group is great for people who understand the impact of life events on their overall wellness and are interested in learning various creative tools to improve.

Note: This program is held numerous times throughout the year, continuously taking referrals.

What: Six group "classes" that follow the American Lung Association's Freedom from Smoking guidelines. In addition, free nicotine replacement patches are offered to group participants at the fourth session. For more info, contact the Behavioral Health Department at 410-837-2050.
Who is eligible: Current patients who wish to quit smoking. 
When/Where: Offered upon patient request. 

What: An open-ended therapy group for LGBTQIA+ clients focused on exploring aspects of ethical non-monogamy and polyamory. Using psychoeducation and processing, we will affirm non-monogamous relationship structures while also building safe and health relationship skills.

When/Where: Thursdays, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Virtual.

 

What: Growing up always has its ups and downs, but it can be harder for gender diverse kids. 

For gender expansive, transgender, and non-binary 13-19 year olds who are experiencing anxiety, depression or other challenges in their life, this group is a safe space to share feelings, work with peers to develop interpersonal skills to help with managing real-world situations, and learn to apply these skills outside of group.

Who this group is for: Gender diverse high school students from Anne Arundel, Howard, or surrounding counties who are in ninth grade or above.

When & Where : Wednesdays, 4PM-5PM via Telehealth.

What the group is about: There are many different coping strategies for those living with mood disorders. 

This safe and supportive group will look at strategies for mood management such as mindfulness (staying present in the moment), emotional regulation (managing intense emotions before they become overwhelming), distress tolerance (coping with emotional and challenging situations without harm), and interpersonal effectiveness (feeling comfortable with communicating and behaving in relationships and social situations).

Who this group is for: Chase Brexton patients who are living with mood disorders.

When & Where: Mondays 2-3PM via Telehealth.

What the group is about: For Black women living with mental health issues like depression and anxiety, this group is about community and healing.

In an interactive, compassionate setting, this 8-week group for African-American women focuses on living with depression and anxiety. Through the group, participants will learn and practice recognizing and addressing the causes of symptoms of depression and anxiety, develop skills to reduce the intense of these symptoms, and get and give support to others as we explore social, spiritual, and behavioral experiences of living with depression and anxiety.

Who this group is for: African American adult women with depression, anxiety, or any mental health issue with depression or anxiety symptoms

When & Where: Wednesdays, 12PM-1PM via Telehealth.

What: Seeking Safety is a group designed to help people with PTSD and other trauma disorders learn new ways of coping with their symptoms. The group focuses on finding ways of coping without the use of Alcohol or Other Drugs, but it also is suitable for people who do not struggle with addictions. Each week offers a different topic, and provides opportunities for patients to engage in activities and discussions related to affective symptom management.
Who is eligible: Patients who have had an initial assessment/evaluation with a provider in the behavioral health department and/or is an active patient at time of referral.
When/where: Fridays, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Virtual.

What: T time is a process-oriented group that provides a safe and trans-affirming space for Trans* and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. Participants will discuss their experiences as binary and non-binary Trans* individuals and receive support and feedback from facilitator and other participants. Participants are provided with the opportunity to be in the community, to provide and receive feedback on topics such as interpersonal functioning, family dynamics, and developing a sense of self, and discuss their lived experiences as TGNC individuals in varied stages of transition.
Who is eligible: Clients do not have to be connected with any other Chase Brexton Health Care services to be eligible but should complete an initial assessment/evaluation with a Behavioral Health provider. All potential members will meet with facilitator for a group screening in order to assess appropriateness of group prior to beginning. For more information, please call 410-837-2050 ext. 8800.
When/where: Mondays, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mt. Vernon Center.

What: A rolling 14-week therapy and psycho-educational support group (i.e. Interpersonal effectiveness, insight-oriented decision making, and self-efficacy skills) focused on exploration of gender identity and considerations for safety and wellness in gender expression. This group provides a confidential and trans-affirming space for individuals to explore topics, access information and resources necessary for healthy gender exploration. Who is eligible: Transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, and gender questioning individuals. All potential members will discuss with a facilitator for a group screening to assess appropriateness of group prior to beginning. Clients do not have to be connected with any other Chase Brexton Health Care services to be eligible but should complete an initial evaluation with a Behavioral Health Provider.
When/Where: Thursdays, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mt. Vernon Center. 

Hybrid

What: A weekly support group for adult Chase Brexton patients living with chronic and complex medical conditions. This group seeks to assist participants in developing supportive connections with peers, explore the shared experience of chronic illness, learn coping skills for symptom management, and develop self-care and self-advocacy strategies
Who is eligible: Ask your Chase Brexton provider to place a referral, or contact our Patient Engagement Specialists at 410-837-2050 ext. 3170 or ext.1073. Admissions are on a rolling basis, participants can join the group at any time. 
When/where: Mondays, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Hybrid: in-person at Mt. Vernon Center and virtual.

What: An ongoing community support group for LGBTQ adults ages 50+. This unstructured social support and process group speaks honestly about experiences and challenges in a confidential, open, and accepting environment. Topics include healthy relationships, active community engagement, family connections, work, retirement, health and wellness, etc. No initial assessment needed; walk-in or call 410-837-2050 ext. 1049 for more information.
Who is eligible: LGBTQ adults 50+
When/Where: Wednesdays, 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Hybrid.

What: A 12-week structured therapy group that explores and navigates aging in our community. Using psychoeducation and processing, members can connect, get support, resources, that contribute to a qualitative life from health, wellness, relationships, to planning and engaging.
When/where: Fridays, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Hybrid.

Columbia

What: Social interactions group designed for children to help regulate emotions in school, home and community by learning newly discovered distress tolerance skills. Each week offers a different topic regarding effective social interactions with either siblings in the home, schoolteachers or parents. Child will learn new healthy coping skills to use effectively with peers and others. 

Who is eligible:  Patients who have had an initial assessment/evaluation with Chase Brexton's behavioral health department or are an active patient at the time of referral.

When/Where: Mondays, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting Oct 6, 2025. Columbia Center, in-person only.

Mt. Vernon

What: Group will focus on and emphasizes resilience while promoting compassion and encouragement within a safe and support environment for women living with HIV.
Who is eligible: Women who are patients at Chase Brexton who are living with HIV. Initial behavioral health assessments are required prior to the start of group. If you are interested in scheduling an assessment for this group please contact 410-837-2050 ext. 8800.
When/where: Mondays, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Mt. Vernon Center. [Note: Hybrid attendance considered on individual basis.]
